Multicultural literature can be instrumental in creating meaningful literacy experiences for children and young adults, especially school children in pluralistic democracies. Multicultural books can assist in affirming a child's sense of identity, as well as, encourage the acceptance, respect, and celebration of diversity within school and community experiences of immigrant and non-immigrant students. When children and young adults are introduced to multicultural literature, they can often find that the experiences of the characters in these books may indeed mirror experiences in the children's own lives. Educators must take great care in selecting multicultural literature for children and young adults to ensure that cultural experiences are accurately portrayed, and that the books do not perpetuate stereotypes. Multicultural books provide a wonderful opportunity for teachers to create interdisciplinary lessons which will enhance the teaching and learning experiences of all students across cultures.
